Going back to my roots...

How did I start illustration in the first place?

Well it first started with dinosaurs, then evolved into Disney characters and animal drawings (ahh i even remember drawing Scar from Lionking!), then gradually I started illustrating the stories that I came up with. Then early in middleschool, I was introduced to Magic the Gathering and then Fantasy Role Playing Games, as we call it FRP in Turkey for short.

Those were the good days, when I knew nothing about anime, and big watery eyes. I used to create characters during class, and I had started collecting them in a file too. That file is still in my drawer back home in Turkey. It's pretty fat right now, and to this day, I still go back to it for inspiration and there have been couple of occasions where I recycled characters from there.

After reading Dragonlance, I had decidede to write my own fantasy novel. I had my attempts at it, and my final attempt is still in progress even today. It's been moving slow the past 5 years, but the spirit is there. Senior year in highschool and busy art school screwed me up a little on that side, plus since I got into Japanese animation, my drawing style has changed tremendously. I feel bad about it, though I enjoy that style still.

So the character designs I talked about above, the file I put them in, they've become one of the finding roots of my fantasy world. And one of the earliest character designs have been recycled into my most famous character today, whom my current book project is about. Some of you have actually seen my paintings and drawings of him too... And few of you know pretty much all about him.

During those times, meaning until 5 years ago, fantasy art and illustration was my whole life. Since reading Dragonlance and Lord of the Rings, my life had changed, I had found a purpose and inspiration in my life. I used to read a lot of novels on that genre as well. Since senior year highschool, I haven't been able to, plus I started reading more fiction or current stuff, then college started so no time for reading at all.

Where I'm getting with all this is that, I haven't drawn almost a single elf or a proper dwarf in the past 5 years. I'm sick of drawing in anime style -though I tremendously love drawing in that style too!

I want to go back to my roots, where I started off from, my base ground, my inspiration to keep me going all these years, my source of inspiration, my core... Fantasy Art.

I've been drawing dragons a while, but that was just another dream of mine. When Todd Lockwood and Jeff Easley are not here anymore, I want to be the next dragon art master Yes I don't draw them enough, or I'm more concentrated on making them more 'concept design-y'. But my mastery on that can wait. Elves, dwarves, drows, fighters, thieves/rougues, clerics, druids, rangers have always been at the core of my inspiration for drawing and I do not want to ignore them any longer.I wish for them to come to the surface once again. I want to remember, I want to feel it again.

This fire in me might be temporary and might go away in the next few days, or maybe hours... But know that this is still the truth and all I have to do is to remind myself of this.It would be the biggest betrayal to myself, if I ever forget this and put aside my book project. I would become uneasy in my own skin.

It has been my dream to work for Wizards of the Coast one day, do Magic cards, D&D book covers and fantasy novel covers. I will make that dream come true one day. And one day, hopefully I will be able to share my book and the world I have created with you. I know it's anxious to meet you, and I shall make that into reality.

I wish to go back to my roots... and bring whatever's down there to the surface to share with every single one of you.

Çizime nasıl başladım?

Eh, önce dinazorlarla başladım, sonra Disney karakterlerine ve hayvan çizimlerine geliştim (Aslan Kral'dan Scar'ı çizdiğimi bile hatırlıyorum), ardından, aşamalı olarak, aklıma gelen hikayeleri çizmeye başladım. Orta okulun başlarında Magic The Gathering (Ç.N.: Fantastik Kağıt oyunu, http://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering) ve sonrasında Türkiye'de kısaca FRP dediğimiz Fantasy Role Playing (Fantastik Rol Yapma) oyunları ile tanıştım.

Onlar, anime (Ç.N.: Japonlara özgü bir canlandırma tarzı) ve büyük sulu gözler hakkında hiç bir şey bilmediğim, güzel günlerdi. Ders sırasında karakter yaratmaya ve bir dosyada toplamaya başlamıştım. O dosya halen Türkiye'deki çekmecemin içindedir. Artık oldukça kalın ve bugün bile ilham almak için ona geri dönerim. Bazı karakterleri yeniden işlediğim durumlar da oldu.

Dragonlance'i (Ç.N.: Ejderhamızrağı, Fantastik bir roman ve bundan uyarlanmış FRP oyunlar) okuduktan sonra, kendi fantastik romanımı yazmaya karar vermiştim. Bir kaç girişimim oldu ve son denemem bugün bile devam etmekte. Son beş yıldır yavaş ilerlemekte ama ruh orada. Lise son ve yoğun Güzel Sanatlar o alanda beni biraz engelledi, ayrıca Japon animasyonuna girdiğimden beri çizgim büyük ölçüde değişti. Canımı sıkıyor olsa da, bu stili halen seviyorum.

Böylece, yukarda bahsettiğim karakter tasarımları ve onları topladığım dosya, fantezi dünyamın kökleri haline geldi. En eski karakter tasarımlarımdan biri, bugün kitap projemin temelini oluşturan en bilindik kahramanıma dönüştü. Bazılarınız onu konu alan resim ve çizimlerimi de gördünüz... Ve birkaçınız onun hakkında hemen her şeyi biliyorsunuz :)

O zamanlar, yani beş yıl öncesine kadar, fantezi sanat ve resimlendirme bütün hayatımdı. Dragonlance ve Lord of the Rings (Ç.N.: Yüzüklein Efendisi, Fantastik roman) okuduğumdan beri hayatım değişti, bir amaç ve esinlenme bulmuştum. O türde daha pek çok kitap okurdum. Lise sondan beri pek yapamadım ayrıca daha çok kurgu ve güncel şeyler okumaya başladım, ardından üniversite başladı ve okumaya zaman kalmadı.

Varmaya çalıştığım nokta, son beş yıldır neredeyse bir tane bile elf veya düzgün bir cüce çizmediğim. Anime çizimleri yapmaktan bıktım ama aynı zamanda o tarzda çizmeyi inanılmaz seviyoum!Köklerime geri dönmek istiyorum, başladığım yere, temelime, bunca yıl devam etmemi sağlayan ilhamıma, yaratıcı kaynağıma, özüme... Fantastik Sanata.

Bir süredir Ejderha çiziyorum ama bu da başka bir hayalim. Todd Lockwood ve Jeff Easley aramızdan ayrıldığında, bir sonraki Ejderha ustası ben olmak istiyorum:) Evet, yeterince çok çizmiyorum veya onları daha çok 'kavramsal tasarım-mımsı' yapmaya odaklanıyorum. Ancak o konudaki ustalığım bekleyebilir. Elfler, cüceler, drow'lar (Ç.N.: Elf türü, Kara Elf), savaşçılar, hırsızlar/dolandırıcılar, rahipler, druidler (Ç.N.: Antik Kelt'lerin rahip topluluğu), kolcular her zaman çizim ilhamımın özü oldular ve artık onları daha fazlla görmezden gelmek istemiyorum.

Yeniden ortaya çıkmalarını istiyorum. Hatırlamak istiyorum, yeniden hissetmek.İçimdeki bu ateş geçici olabilir ve önümüzdeki bir kaç gün hatta saatte sönebilir... Ama bilin ki bu halen gerçektir ve tek yapmam gereken kendime bunu hatırlatmaktır.

Bunu unutmak ve kitap projemi rafa kaldırmak kendime yapabileceğim en büyük ihanet olurdu. Kendi tenimde rahatsız olurdum.

Bir gün Wizards of the Coast (Ç.N.: Fantastik oyunlar çıkaran bir firma) için çalışmak hayalimdi, Magic (Ç.N.: Fantastik kağıt oyunu) kağıtları yapmak, D&D (Ç.N.: 'Dungeons and Dragons', Zindan ve Ejderha, rol yapma oyunu ve kitapları) kitap kapakları ve fantastik roman kapakları resmetmek. Bir gün bu hayali gerçekleştireceğim. Ve bir gün, umarım kitabımı ve yarattığım dünyayı sizinle paylaşabilirim. Sizinle buluşmaya çok istekli olduğunu biliyorum ve bunun gerçek olmasını sağlayacağım.
